Introduction

There are currently 16 EBU bridge clubs in Cornwall meeting on a variety of weekday evenings.   Most county events are held on Sundays between September and April at Ladock village hall, just east of Truro.   The County hosts two events open to all members of the EBU.  In Spring, the three day Cornish Congress (Sunday's Swiss Teams is a Green Point event) is held in the attractive maritime town of Falmouth, and in late September, a one day Green Point Swiss Teams event is held at Wadebridge in North Cornwall.

At the recent AGM Harold Payne retired as Chairman having completed his three years in office. The incoming Chairman is Geoff Warren, who, although unable to attend the AGM, wanted the statement below to be included on the new website.

New Chairman's Statement

With a new Chairman and, in Bill Thomson (new Deputy Chairman) and Chris Bickerdike (new Secretary) you  might say we have a new team at CCBA.  I don't know about the others, but I have a degree of trepidation in trying to follow in Harold's footsteps.   He and Jan Keast were such stalwart officers who did so much - a lot of it 'behind the scenes' - a lot of it to keep the county moving in the right direction.

Fortunately I know we can rely on their help if - or perhaps I should say when - we get ourselves into a bit of a tangle.   Moreover we have the support of an extremely experienced Committee to keep our feet on the ground.

The EBU proposal for Pay 2 Play could well dominate English Bridge for the next few years and I am mindful of the old Chinese curse:  ' may you live in interesting times'.    Well,  we've got some interesting times ahead and against this background we have to try even harder to promote bridge in Cornwall - to bring in new players, help existing players to develop, give greater support to county events and encourage players to put themselves forward for representational events - can anything be better than to represent Cornwall in a bridge match?

We will need to know your thoughts,  we need feedback from the ordinary club player - what is CCBA doing wrong? - what is it doing right? - how can we make things better?

To this end I intend to visit every club during my tenure in office;  I want to meet you, play bridge with you,  listen to your ideas,  your problems, your grouses and, perhaps, occasionally your plaudits.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Geoff Warren

Visitors to Cornwall?

As the most popular county in England in which to holiday,  all our clubs are happy to welcome visiting bridge players for some mental stimulation after a relaxing day on the beach or walking the coastline!   Again, contact club secretaries so they know to expect you.
