Change of Dates
Falmouth BC has decided to run both its Open events on a Sunday rather than a Saturday. This means the Falmouth Swiss Pairs, originally scheduled for Saturday 18 September, will now be run on Sunday 19 September 2.00pm start. Similarly, in the New Year, the Falmouth Salver will now be run on Sunday 9th January, again with a 2.00pm start. Please amend your county booklet accordingly, and pass on these changes to other bridge players.

Annual General Meeting
The 28th AGM will be held at Ladock Village Hall on Sunday 12 September 2.00pm, followed by the Norman Woodhouse Individual for which there is no entry fee. A copy of the Agenda can be read by visiting the AGM/Committee meetings page; also minutes from the last AGM.
National County Teams Final
The Cornwall C team, which won their division of the South Western league recently, travelled to West Midlands BC in Solihull on Sunday 11 July for the National County Teams Final. They were represented by Brian (captain) and Elaine Relton, Viv
Mably and Celia Bishop, Alan Biggs & Ian Edwards, Dave Mattos and
John Finch, and competed against the winners of the other four regions of England - Merseyside/Cheshire, Kent, Essex, and Derbyshire. They won one match - against Essex - and finished joint 4th on 31 VPs (40 VPs was average). This was a creditable performance - and good experience for the team - particularly when one realises that the winners, Derbyshire, included four life masters in their team!
Jo Brown Memorial Trophy
The inaugural running of this event took place on Saturday 27 June in St. Austell. A good turnout of 30 pairs supported the Cornwall Leukemia Trust, and the winners were John Finch & Dave Mattos with 62.86%. Closely behind were Irene Rowlandson & Monica Gumb with 61.19%, and Mary Hardisty & Veronica Pryme with 60.60%.

Welsh Seniors Congress
Cornish players Jenny Vaughan and Heather Upton, playing with Jenny's sister Irene Thomas and Graham Jones, finished an excellent 3rd equal with 89 VPs in the one day Swiss teams event at Cardiff over the recent bank holiday weekend.
Corwen Trophy 2010
The Corwen Trophy, for winners of each counties' Pairs Championship, was played in Hinckley on 5-6 June 2010. David & Dommie Boxall and Bill Thomson & Geoff Warren represented Cornwall, and, in a very strong field of 113 pairs, finished 90th (46.71%) and 65th (49.15%) respectively. Winners were Devon pair Jim Grant & Stefan Lindfors.
Success at Kent One Day Green Point Teams
Cornwall pair, Sandra & Chris Bickerdike, playing with friends Shirley Goldwin & Brian Crack in this event on Sunday 23 May, finished 2nd in a field of 49 teams. Highlight of the day was their final match against internationals Heather Dhondy & Nevena Senior playing with Brian Senior & Manny Marks who they beat 18-2. This gave them a final score of 103 VPs, four behind the winners.
Marie Gregson-Brown Trophy
This event organised by St. Austell BC moved to a new venue, the Porth Avallen Hotel in Carlyon Bay, at a new time of year, and it was a resounding success. Entries were up by 50% and a most enjoyable day's bridge in an ideal environment was had by all. There was a blanket finish with the first three pairs separated by a mere 0.23%. Winners for the third year running (no, Jill, you can't keep the cup!) were David & Jill Newton with 60.42%, closely followed by Sandra & Chris Bickerdike (60.26%) and Pat Meade & Colin Pote (60.19%) . A big thanks to Douglas Bence and his team for putting on such an excellent day - and remember to put this one in your diary for next year.
Western League Success
Cornwall has acquitted itself with great credit in this year's Western League, finishing 2nd in the overall placings behind winners Avon (A, B & C teams results added together). In the C Division, Cornwall won the league with a score of 90 VPs beating Wiltshire by 5 VPs. Congratulations to the 4 pairs who played during the year - Brian (captain) & Elaine Relton, Viv Mably & Celia Bishop, Ian Edwards & Alan Biggs, Dave Mattos & John Finch. In the B Division, Cornwall finished the season with 2 good wins to finish with 79 VPs lifting them into 2nd place behind Avon. And our premier side won 3 of its matches this year - a big improvement on last year - to finish with 56 VPs (7th place). East Wales won the A Division convincingly. Full results by clicking here.
A big thank you from the selectors - Mike Booth, Bill Thomson, Rod Bell, and Brian Relton - to all players who represented the county throughout the year.
East League 2009-10
The Teams of 4 champions for East Cornwall is Liskeard Lot (Roger & Janet Putnam, Colin Pote, Mike Booth) who beat last year's winners China Clay Aces by a clear 30 VPs (149 to 119). They will now play the winners of the West Cornwall league, The Shufflers, for the Holden Trophy.
County Teams of Four Knockout
Bill Thomson (Geoff Warren, Jenny Cant, Rob Mabley) has beaten Dommy Boxall (Jenny Vaughan, Val Clifford, David Boxall) by 8 IMPs in the 48 board final played on 7 April. 30 IMPs down at half way, Boxall clawed back 26 IMPs on the next eight boards, and with eight to go were 14 IMPs down. Congratulations to Thomson who now goes forward to represent Cornwall in the Pachabo Cup in Hinckley on June 12-13.
Both Dommy & David and Bill & Geoff will be in Hinckley the weekend before. They finished 1st. and 2nd. in our John Perks Final, and qualified for the Corwen Trophy. We wish all six players involved the best of luck in these two events.
Cornwall Congress 2010
A very enjoyable and successful Congress was held for the third time at the Falmouth Beach Hotel on 26-28 March 2010. With the inclusion for the first time of a Newcomers Pairs on Friday afternoon, numbers were up by 8% on last year. The honours were dominated by players from across the Tamar in Devon - particularly notable being the convincing win by John Beard and John Lankshear in the Championship Pairs final; and the win by Ann Slee (Richard Lingham, Brigid McElroy, Ruth Edmondson) in the Green Pointed Swiss Teams on Sunday.
On the home front, the most notable performances were by David Stone & Val Pitman with a 3rd, 2nd= and a 3rd= in the Championship Pairs Final ; 2nd by Barry Benfield & Brian Colvin in the Fistral Cup Final ; and the Stephen Crouch (Peter Polden, Lynda & David Chidell) team who won their first six matches on Sunday - lying second going into the last match - but alas they lost their last match heavily to finish 8th.

John Perks Success For Boxalls
The final of the county pairs championship was played at Ladock on Sunday 14 March, and it resulted in a fine win by Dave and Dommy Boxall. They led after the first session with over 64%, and kept their nerve in the second session to finish with nearly 59% and a comfortable win by 2.5%. Runners-up were Bill Thomson & Geoff Warren with 56.4%; and third equal were Colin Pote & Mike Booth and Mick Robson & Jo Bryant. Full results by clicking here.
Dave and Dommy are now within sight of a unique treble in Cornish bridge in 2010. In addition to their John Perks success, they were the backbone of Camborne Bridge Club's victory in the County Teams of Eight last month. And they are also in the final of the County teams of Four knockout which is yet to be played. They really are on a hot streak at the moment!
West League 2009-10
With only playing 7 matches in total, the West League has finished already. Winners again are
The Shufflers (Wendy Miller, Wendy Thornton, Joe Bryant, Wally Heaton, David Stone (occasionally)) who beat
Double Entry ( 2 Keasts & 2 Robsons) 103 VPs to 99 VPs. They appeared to be coasting to victory, but after a surprising 15-5 reversal against
Reshuffled in Round 6, the winners could have been overtaken in the final round of matches. Indeed they were losing at the half way stage of their match against
Dancers, but like true champions they knuckled down in the second half - David Stone even lay off the red wine for a few hands - to win the match 12-8. Final positions by clicking
