18 pairs entered this National competition played at the John Betjeman Centre in Wadebridge on Sunday 7 February. Leading qualifiers were Pauline & John Deal with 63.66%, closely followed by Roger Bunt & Richard Draycott on 62.73%. For full results and other qualifiers click here.

County Teams of Four Championship
The premier teams of four competition of the year was played at Ladock on Sunday 31 January. Thirteen teams entered and winners with 169 VPs were Jan Keast (Ken Keast, Margaret Warner, Janet Heath). They finished ahead of David Newton (Jill Newton, Robert Mabley, Alan Biggs) on 160 VPs, with Pat Meade (Ruth Harvey, Colin Pote, Mike Booth) third on 149 VPs. Full results by clicking here.
Falmouth Salver
The delayed Falmouth Salver was played at Falmouth BC on Saturday 23 January, and last year's winners, Ann James and Liz Williams, again came out on top with 59.7%. Second was Bill Berks and Graham Buck with 58.2%; and third was Stephen Crouch and Peter Polden with 57.8%. Full result by clicking here.
BBL Simultaneous Pairs
Delayed by one week due the bad weather, several heats of this event were played in Cornwall on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday 18-20 January. There were several excellent 60%+ results, but pride of place goes to Caroline Scott & Alan Merchant-White on Tuesday evening in Bude with a massive 68.63%. This placed them nationally 11th out of 1844 pairs. Congratulations on a fine performance!
Star Masters Pairs Championship
For players ranked star master or above, this event was played on Sunday 17 January, and in a very close finish was won by Jan and Ken Keast with 60.3% from Rod Bell and Ian Macfarlane with 59.9%. Tredova Cup
For non-EBU members, and players below one star master, this event was also played on Sunday 17 January. Convincing winners were Bob Pretty and Gill Lovegrove with 65.0%; second were Ian Edwards and Alan Biggs with 59.6%; and third were Evelyn Knight and Sue Cresswell with 53.3%. Ryley King (Ladies Pairs) Trophy
17 pairs entered this event played at Ladock on Sunday 6 December. Winners with 60.1% were Frances Barker & Sandra Bickerdike; second with 58.8% were Ann Ampleford & Val Clifford; and closely behind in third place were Val Pitman & Pauline Deal with 58.1%.
Hilda Higman (Mens Pairs) Trophy
Just 12 pairs entered this event played at Ladock on Sunday 6 December. Convincing winners, and retaining the trophy, were Chris Bickerdike & Stephen Crouch with 69.0%, with Bill Thomson & Mike Booth (61.2%) second, and Ken Keast & Mike Robson (54.1%) third.
Bodmin Swiss Pairs
This event, again well supported with an entry of 36 pairs, was played at Lanhydrock Golf Club on Sunday 29 November. It resulted in a resounding victory for Brian Edwards & June Fitness who won comfortably all six matches to finish with an impressive total of 101 VPs. Runners-up were Stephen Crouch & Peter Polden with 85 VPs, and third with 79 VPs were Devon pair Ian Hopkins & Maureen Baser. Congratulations to Brian and June on a brilliant victory! Newcomers Pairs
This event was played at Ladock for the first time on Sunday 22 November. An enjoyable afternoon's bridge - including a Cornish cream tea - was won in fine style by Mary Painter & John Heath with 62.8%. NICKO Results
Three clubs from Cornwall have entered this year's National Inter-Club Knockout (NICKO) competition, and all three have won their first round matches. Bude (capained by Alan Biggs) beat Exeter D ; Liskeard (captained by Colin Pote) beat Torquay A ; and Wadebridge (captained by Bill Thomson) beat Kingsbridge A. We will follow their progress with interest, and hope to be reporting more success in England's premier club knockout.
Celtic Success at Torquay Congress
Cornish player, Jenny Vaughan, playing with her sister Irene Thomas, together with South Wales pair Gwyneth Dew and Liam Sheridan, won the Sunday teams event at the ever popular Torquay Bridge Club Congress held on 13-15 November at the Palace Hotel, Torquay. Leading throughout the event they totalled 106 VPs to win by 6 VPs from four teams all finishing with 100 VPs. On Saturday, Martin & Helga Turner won the Consolation Pairs with a cracking 68.38%.
